The Reading RulesⒸ FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What are The Reading Rules?
The Reading Rules program is a phonics-based program in which common letter/sound combinations and patterns found in the English language are taught and addressed, as opposed to being written-off as irregularities in the English language.
How is The Reading Rules different from other reading programs?
The Reading Rules transform these irregular sound/spelling patterns into dependable and recognizable “Rules”. These rules are internalized and become 23 consistent and highly reliable patterns for decoding the English language.
The Reading Rules can be used in the classroom with a teacher or at home with a parent or tutor. These patterns can be rapidly memorized using alliteration, characterization, numeric assignment, and color-coding. They are introduced in a systematic yet rapid way and are practiced holistically on an everyday basis.
These techniques appeal to the various learning styles of different students by incorporating pictures, sounds, music, and patterns, as well as interpersonal techniques. By utilizing these varying learning modalities or approaches, students learn and internalize The Reading Rules rapidly because they address and cater to their individual learning styles.
The Reading Rules are effective in teaching students of every age how to read in English, regardless of primary native language. If used consistently in a traditional classroom, mastery of all 23 Reading Rules will be achieved after the first year of instruction.
When used in a one-on-one setting, instruction can be even more effective.
Will The Reading Rules work for parents?
Yes. The Reading Rules is systematic and at the same time so simplistic, that it is not only an effective tool for any parent to use to teach their child, but can be used by parents who are not native or fluent English speakers. You will have the option of receiving the manual in various languages.
How effective is The Reading Rules?
Yes! is extremely simple and easy to use and implement for student, teacher, and parent use.
Does The Reading Rules work for second language learners?
Yes. As an experienced classroom teacher I can tell you The Reading Rules works better than any other reading program I have used.
Why was The Reading Rules created?
Today in the United States, children take from 1-5 years to learn to read. In general, the reading process is delayed due largely to the fact that children are not being given the tools needed to effectively master basic word decoding. Most reading programs rely on visual memory as the foundation for reading acquisition.
For decades, research has shown there are not only different ways to learn, but also individual learning styles vary from student to student. This is where many teaching techniques fail. If a student is not “wired” toward learning through visual memory or, unfortunately, has a lesser-developed capacity to learn through visual memorization, retention of concepts will be delayed.
Through my experience as a classroom teacher I have found a way to remedy these issues. Out of my desire to share this solution with the World, I created The Reading Rules.
How long does it take to learn to read using The Reading Rules?
Because students learn at different rates, it can take anywhere from 1 week to 1 year to master reading using The Reading Rules, depending on the aggressiveness of the implementation, and the attention span and retention of the student. The Reading Rules are effective in teaching students of every age how to read in English, regardless of primary native language.
If used consistently in a traditional classroom, mastery of all 23 Reading Rules will be achieved after the first year of instruction. When used in a one-on-one setting, instruction can be even more effective.
Is The Reading Rules only for children or can it work for adults?
Even though The Reading Rules is geared toward being a kid friendly program, it absolutely can be just as effective when used with adults, whether English is their primary language or not.

Does The Reading Rules work for people with learning disabilities?
Yes. In my experience as a classroom teacher, I have had the opportunity to teach many students who were diagnosed with autism, aphasia, ADHD, and other processing disorders. Because The Reading Rules uses multiple learning modalities to master English sounds, it works better than any other reading program I have seen for students with these challenges.
